I know its huge but below is the complete 2012 benchgraft list. This is the most extensive list ever offered for custom grafting antique apple and pear trees. Most likely you will never see such an offering again. Please note this is a complete list from our orchard plus our supplier's orchards. We will not graft anything that still has a patent - please check your local rules regarding shipping in apples and pears. Many of the varieties listed below will only be available for 2012 - please consider ordering additional trees to preserve these endangered apples and pears (complete pear list will be in next post). One of our heros, Nick Botner is retiring and his collection needs to be preserved (he currently has his massive orchard and home for sale) - the only way to ensure that is to get these fruit trees backed up in as many locations as possible. The list below is a benchgraft list only - we cannot supply scionwood from this list at our normal prices. We will pay on average $5 a stick from this list and then buy scionwood to graft to - then we will absorb shipping/handling/insurance costs to deliver them to you at $10/tree with a 10 tree minimum. We are primarily concerned with preservation of this collection - if you own a preservation orchard and would like to swap scionwood please call us at 913-893-6050.
Mail a check with a summary of your order to Wagon Wheel Orchard 15380 Edgerton Rd Gardner KS 66030. First requested/first fulfilled - please do not wait until last minute! We will be shipping in late March to early April or as weather permits.

Get Your Want List Ready!
We have met with several scion wood suppliers and we are putting the final touches on what will be the most amazing benchgraft list ever offered in the world! One supplier says this may be his last year selling scionwood so we would like to get as many of these trees grafted and backed-up in as many orchards as possible. We will be selling apple and pear benchgrafts for $10 each (includes tax and shipping/handling) with a 10 tree minimum. Basically if the tree is not pattented and it still exists we can supply it for this season (and maybe this season only). The list is currently at over 3,000 apple varities alone. We are trying to iron out which variety names are synonyms of others etc. Please watch this blog over the next few days as we will be adding the apple and pear lists shortly. If you would like the lists emailed to you in either excel or word formats we would be happy to do that. Our email is Wagonwheelmail@aol.com The excel file will contain whatever info we have been able to gather on variety descriptions and characteristics.

Hawkeye Delicious Trees
I've had so many emails on this apple I have to make a special post just for it. This is the original "red delicious" - which started as a seedling on the farm of Jesse Hiatt in Peru, Iowa around 1870. Jesse tried to kill the tree for several years but it persisted and he finally said "If thee must live, thee may". Years later he entered the tree into a contest held by Stark Brother Nursery to replace the Ben Davis apple. Jesse entered it as "Hawkeye Delicious" as Iowa is the Hawkeye State. He won the contest and the apple was rebranded to Red Delicious. The apple you see in the stores today is an example of the worst in modern produce. The current Red Delicious strains have been developed for color and the ability not to show their bruises. At Wagon Wheel Orchard we will not grow the modern Reds - but we do love the original. We will be offering custom grafted Hawkeye trees for our 2012 spring season. Scion wood is limited so please get your order in early! ($10 a tree 10 tree minimum, all taxes and shipping included) We would love to see the original Hawkeye Delicious make a comeback! Please check previous posts for additional varieties offered - I'll be doing a comprehensive list soon. Thanks, Rick

Its getting cold again!
Thanks to everyone who made it out for our 2011 season. Despite a bad drought this year we still had a decent crop of un-sprayed fruit.
We are now taking orders for custom bench grafted trees. We can graft almost any variety for you at $10/tree with a 10 tree minimum (includes shipping and taxes). Currently we are putting together a master list of the more than 1,000 varieties we have in stock (we lost a few due to the heat this summer). Please email us at wagonwheelmail@aol.com with your requests. We prefer to graft on M111 rootstock as this gives you a hardy free standing semi-dwarf tree with little care but we can do other rootstocks for larger orders. Thanks, Rick

Fall apples and pears
The drought this summer plus 100+ degree weather for an extended period has really got our trees confused! Some dropped all their leaves and fruit and are blooming right now. We do have over 1,000 varieties so many of these are relatively unaffected (southern friendly apples). We do have quite a bit of fall fruit that has not caught up to its normal size yet. We're hoping that the recent rains and cooler temps allow us to open in a couple weeks with fall apples and pears. Thanks, Rick aka Orchard Guy

No Peaches This Year
The latest storm has knocked off all of the remaining peaches. Our apple crop still looks good for this year. We are currently taking appointments for group tours - please email us at wagonwheelmail@aol.com to reserve your group's time.

Hail smail
Hey gang! We have had several bad storms come through this spring. Many of you know about the storm that went through Joplin, Missouri. That same storm sent some nastiness our way and we've had a couple more storms since. The hail pummeled our almost ripe cherries and did too much damage to open for cherry picking. We are looking towards mid/late July for Peach season. Please check the picking report in the right margin for dates/times as we get closer.

Fruit tree grafting time is in full swing!
How 'bout dem apples? How'd you like to grow your own fruit like the apples in this picture? These were growing on a 5 year old tree.
We've had so many people ask about specific apples and pears that we may add in the future so here's a list of varieties we are tentatively adding to the orchard for 2011.
Note – please see Jan 4th 2011 blog post for ordering bench grafts or scion wood and our current "in ground" list.
Below is a work in progress of the varieties that we are requesting from various sources to add to the preservation orchard this year. We are posting this now so collectors can begin to create their wish lists for 2012 and beyond. Please note that this is a partial list of trees or scion wood we have requested and there are some redundancies due to customer’s orders or deer damage replacement. Most likely we will be adding another 100-200 types before the season ends. As always we will not bench graft patented varieties.
If you know of any endangered trees or homestead apples with an interesting history please contact us at wagonwheelmail@aol.com so that we can preserve that variety for future generations. We will be receiving our shipment of rootstock shortly and we will be grafting over the next several weeks.

Apple of the Month - Ashmead's Kernel
Ashmead’s Kernel Apple, nostalgia for your mouth
Like many old apples, the originator of this variety is in its name – Ashmead. In 1700, Dr. Thomas Ashmead raised a tree in his Gloucester, England garden. The second half of the name “Kernel”, is a common term for a tree grown from seed (aka pip or kernel).
Ashmead’s Kernel is a great example of not judging a book by its cover. This small to medium apple is not found in the grocer’s because of our tendency to buy with our eyes and not our taste buds. Ashmead’s has a drab russeted appearance, resembling a greenish golden smooth potato but beneath this exterior is one of the most splendid tastes in the whole orchard!
The British have a candy called a “pear drop” which most North Americans have never tried. The closest thing we have with similar flavoring would be “Juicy Fruit” gum. Most people will find some taste similarities in russeted apples. They tend to have flavor descriptions that sound more like wine than fruit. Common terms used include “nutty, sharp and aromatic” even “hints of oak” have been used to describe Ashmead’s – odd for something fresh off of a tree instead of drawn from a barrel. There is an elusive indescribable character to the Ashmead’s Kernel which sets it apart and is the reason why this apple has been so popular worldwide for hundreds of years. You simply must eat one to know one.
When coming to North America many early settlers brought bench-grafted apple trees along with them. Having a healthy orchard was a priority as cider was the most popular drink. Most family favorites brought to the New World did not adapt well to the climate and were cast aside in favor of newer seedlings. There are a small number of apples from England that thrive in the states, Ashmead’s is one of them. Listed in many eastern publications by 1826, this apple was exhibited before the Cincinnati Horticultural Society in 1855 and quickly made its way west. Here in Kansas (where we once had over 20 million fruit trees and 2,500 apple varieties growing), it was held in great esteem and was listed in many growers “top 10” apples for their counties. At Wagon Wheel Orchard, our trees have grown for over a decade with little or no maintenance. Many of our trees were bearing fruit the third year we grafted them. (see Jan 4th, 2011 blog article on custom grafting)
Ashmead’s is a fantastic eating apple, especially with a good cheese. Our favorite combination is Camembert (a soft brie-like cheese), sesame crackers and Kernels. Camembert cheese is gaining popularity and can be found in most grocery stores. Historically Ashmead’s has been a favorite for making a varietal cider (hard cider) or to be used in cider blends to add complexity.

Thanks to Mother Earth News!!!
On Monday, Mother Earth News posted a blog article written by Rick about Grandma Greuel's famous crab apple jelly. Please check out the link below:
http://www.motherearthnews.com/grow-it/awesome-apple-offerings-plus-an-heirloom-crab-apple-jelly-recipe.aspx
Cheryl Long was kind enough to add a piece about our tree sales. As many of you know, Wagon Wheel Orchard has a focus on preserving antique apple and pear trees. The best way to make sure a variety survives for future generations is to get several trees planted in different locations. This year we have added dozens of endangered trees to our bench graft offerings. One of the trees we are now grafting for 2011 is the very same "Grandma Greuel's Crab Apple" as mentioned in the article.

Grafting season is again upon us!
At Wagon Wheel Orchard we always say that “variety is our specialty”. We have a decided focus on preserving antique and heirloom fruit trees through our grafting services. We have over 700 fruit varieties in our orchard and as you can see from the list below there’s something for everyone.
Let us make sure your old homestead variety is passed on by custom grafting trees for the whole family (very cool gift).
We do bench grafts or custom grafting of apple and pear trees at $9 each with no shipping charges, all taxes included and only a 7 tree minimum!
ROOTSTOCK (Controls the size of the tree) Our default rootstock for apples is M111 and we use the disease resistant “Old Home” series for pear rootstock. Both will produce a semi-dwarf tree that should be in the 15 to 18 foot tall range when mature. We use these rootstocks for their adaptability and health. If you have an alternate preference, please email us at Wagonwheelmail@aol.com with your request.
SCION WOOD We are also offering scion wood at $4 a stick with no shipping charges (taxes included) and only a 8 stick minimum. Please contact us at Wagonwheelmail@aol.com for volume discounts above 40 sticks. Sticks will be approx 12” long and as close to ¼” thick as possible.
Please check local regulations before you request your trees, grafts or seeds. Please note that this a partial list of the varieties we have in our orchard and do not order any that are patented.
PAW PAW SEEDS Fruit tastes like banana custard. 2/$1 (16/$8 order min. or no min. if combined with scion or bench graft orders) We can also supply bulk orders – email for details.
Please check local regulations before you request your trees, grafts or seeds. Please note that this a complete list of the varieties we have in our orchard and do not order any that are patented.
Below is a list of the trees we have at Wagon Wheel Orchard in 2011. The trees listed with an asterisk are available in limited quantity - please list an alternate variety in your order.
